It is widely used on single-side boards and one of the most common methods of desoldering. It is an oxygen-free copper braid which has been treated with solder flux. A soldering iron is used to heat the joint which is in contact with the soldering wick. This results in melting of the solder which is then sucked into the wick through capillary action. The melted solder in the wick is then allowed to solidify which is ultimately discarded.
